Points or cash? Include taxes, fees and the value of your points

By Brahe Labs ·

A flight that costs fewer points can still leave you worse off. Compare the cash fare, award taxes and fees, and the value of the points you would spend. Vetra compares award flights and cash fares using your balances and eligible transfer paths. This worked example shows the arithmetic behind that decision.

The figures below are illustrative, prepared on November 7, 2026. They are not live quotes or a claim that these awards can currently be booked. Assume one adult flying nonstop from New York JFK to London Heathrow in economy, with a comparable cash fare of $450 including taxes and fees. Hold the date, schedule, cabin and included baggage constant. Check change and cancellation conditions before choosing a real fare.

Choice Points spent Cash paid at booking
Cash fare 0 $450
Award A 25,000 $80
Award B 20,000 $220

Assume these are source points from the same transferable balance. Both awards are eligible for a 1-to-1 transfer, with sufficient balance, no bonus and no additional transfer charge. Different currencies or transfer ratios would require a different calculation.

Start with the cash you avoid paying

Award A replaces a $450 cash fare with an $80 payment. It avoids $370 of cash spending. Dividing that by 25,000 points gives 1.48 cents per point.

Award B avoids $230 of cash spending after its $220 payment. Dividing by 20,000 points gives 1.15 cents per point.

Choice Cash fare minus award taxes and fees Value obtained per point
Award A $450 − $80 = $370 $370 ÷ 25,000 = 1.48¢
Award B $450 − $220 = $230 $230 ÷ 20,000 = 1.15¢

Award B uses 5,000 fewer points, but requires $140 more cash. Award A's extra 5,000 points avoid that $140 payment, equivalent to 2.8 cents per additional point spent.

Account for what you give up when you spend the points

For this example, use an illustrative point value of 1.25 cents. That assumption values the 25,000 points in Award A at $312.50, and the 20,000 points in Award B at $250. It is an opportunity-cost assumption, with no cash payment of that amount and no promise of what a future redemption will be worth.

Choice Points value plus cash at booking Difference from paying $450 cash
Cash fare $450 $0
Award A $312.50 + $80 = $392.50 $57.50 lower
Award B $250 + $220 = $470 $20 higher

At this assumed point value, Award A provides $57.50 of net reward value. Award B's lower point requirement does not compensate for its larger cash payment.

The answer changes if your point-value assumption changes. At 1.6 cents per point, Award A uses $400 of points value plus $80 cash, totaling $480. Award B uses $320 of points value plus $220 cash, totaling $540. Paying $450 cash then has the lowest total under that assumption.

Check the comparison and your actual balance

Use the fare you would reasonably buy as the cash comparison. A refundable business fare and a restrictive economy award answer different travel needs. Also check passengers, dates, stops, baggage and booking conditions.

An attractive calculation cannot make an award available or fund a transfer your account cannot support. If your usable balance were 22,000 points, Award A would be out of reach under these assumptions. Award B and the cash fare would remain feasible, and their economics would still need comparing.

How this relates to Vetra

Vetra uses observed point-value benchmarks and the source points actually consumed, including supported transfer ratios, increments and applicable bonuses. The 1.25-cent and 1.6-cent assumptions here are teaching examples, with no claim that Vetra currently assigns either value to a particular currency.

For cash comparisons, Vetra prefers an exact flight match. When an exact match is unavailable, it can use a qualifying alternative on the requested route with no more stops and the same or higher cabin. A comparison against an alternative is different from a quote for the award flight's own cash fare. Confirm the actual fare and booking conditions with the airline or rewards program.
